NSFW content continues to grow in popularity on major gaming platforms, so why is adult VR still so taboo? The gaming industry is projected to generate a whopping $200 billion in 2023, while adult content on the internet brings in about $2.5 billion annually. Despite these almost unimaginable numbers, some of the best VR porn games are still super hard to find and enjoy.
The War on Adult VR in Gaming
Sex sells. That’s right. You know it and I know it, and despite the unquestionable connection between VR gaming and porn, gaming platforms insist on treating it like a dirty little secret. You’d think that pulling a pretty profit would be enough of a motivating factor to offer X-rated media, but it is constantly a contentious issue between hardcore gamers and lovers of hardcore.
In 2018, Valve announced that they would allow any type of content on Steam outside of anything illegal or considered extreme trolling. These changes create confusion for developers who struggle to keep up with Valve’s ever-changing Terms of Service. Thing is, you can search “nudity” and get results, but most are not in VR, so you’ll need to sift through a long list of apps.
Will Oculus ever allow porn on their platform? In my humble opinion, that will happen when pigs fly! Facebook is known for being a family-friendly network but it is also infamous for its often questionable practices toward user privacy. The company downplays being complicit in any data theft, but if they want to continue pushing that wholesome image, porn will be a big no-no.
Let’s Look At the Numbers
While Zuckerberg has opted not to release actual sales numbers like many other headset producers, as of June 2021, there has been an estimated 5m+ units sold since Oculus’ release in October 2020. Facebook, which acquired Oculus in early 2014, has received backlash for its attempted monopolization of the metaverse, accused of sullying the community and its efforts.
In 2020, the company’s yearly revenue amounted to approximately $86 billion. While adopting virtual reality has been a success, they lost about $6 billion this year because it costs more money to produce the Quest 2 headsets than they are actually being sold for. Zuckerberg has mentioned that it is a small price to pay to be at the forefront of advancing VR technology.
If you haven’t yet taken the plunge and purchased your own VR headset, what are you waiting for? Considering how many Quest 2s have sold already, it’s likely you have a friend who’d let you test things out (with your pants on… or not). Prefer not to share your data with Facebook? There are still a bunch of VR headsets outside of the Oculus family to choose from.
Which HMDs Are the Community Using?
I was super curious about the types of headsets that VR enthusiasts are using the most, so I did a Twitter poll online and the results were interesting, to say the least. Before the poll, I expected to see a majority of users strapping on an Oculus Quest 2 and getting down to business. And while there was a substantial amount of Quest 2 users, there were far fewer than I had thought.
Twitter only allows four options for its polling functionality, so it was kind of difficult to choose which headsets to include. I selected Google Cardboard/Samsung Gear as well as the Oculus Rift/Quest 1, the Oculus Quest 2, and the Valve Index, prompting participating Twitter users to comment if there was an HMD they use that wasn’t mentioned. And whoa, did the poll blow up!
Almost 60% of participants stated that they use the Quest 2 primarily, 19% preferred the Rift or Quest, the same percentage opted to use the Valve Index. I was totally schooled in the comments for even including the Cardboard or Gear in the poll, but my previous research has shown that many VR porn users still pick basic HMDs for their easy usability and low price.

Just because VR porn continues to be banned on most mainstream gaming platforms doesn’t mean it’s not out there, it just takes a little more searching around. Which honestly, is the last thing you want to do when you’re trying to get your rocks off. Many in the gaming community claimed that these streams, which included attractive women busting out of their bikinis, diluted the integrity of the platform and created a dangerous precedent.
Others, however, either praised the hot tub streams, got a good giggle from the idea of it, or were completely indifferent. Twitch took a controversial stance, attesting that they have no right to exclude content creators according to their “perceived attractiveness” by other users, adopting a “don’t look if you don’t like it” attitude. Personally, I am all for hot tub streamers!
